Ammoudi Bay has served as Oia's fishing harbour since the eighteenth century, when captains built stone boat sheds into the volcanic rock and painted their doors the same cobalt as the Aegean.
The bay sits 70 metres below the caldera rim, connected to Oia village by 235 hand-cut steps that zigzag past donkey stables and whitewashed chapels. In 1956, the earthquake that reshaped Santorini's northern coast left Ammoudi intact, and the harbour became the primary departure point for volcanic island expeditions.

Ammoudi Bay operates daily from 09:00 to 21:00, with no entrance fee for harbour access. Arriving between 09:00 and 10:30 secures parking in the upper village before the bay becomes congested and allows time to descend the steps without midday sun exposure. Fishermen still moor traditional caïques alongside the catamaran fleet, and tavernas built into the cliff base serve octopus caught the same morning.
